Prostate Cancer Overview

PROSTATE CANCER
Prostate cancer is a malignant (cancerous) tumor (growth), which consists of cells of the prostate gland. Typically, the cancer usually grows slowly and remains only a gland for many years. During this time, the tumor produces little or no symptoms or outward signs (abnormalities on physical examination). However, not all prostate cancers do not behave the same way. Some of the aggressive types of prostate cancer grow and spread more quickly than others and may result in significantly shorter life expectancy for men is affected by them. As the cancer advances, however, it can spread from the prostate into surrounding tissues (local spread). In addition, cancer can also metastasize (spread further) through other parts of the body such as bones, lungs and liver.
